The Bakery School Project

Support for Disadvantaged Young Women in Sri Lanka

About The Bakery School Project

Since 2014, The Bakery School has provided young women and girls with a transformative pathway to independence and financial stability. The young women, who primarily come from a background of sexual abuse, domestic violence and/or economic hardship, are trained in commercial baking in two four-month semesters, giving them hope for a new start in life. Alongside their culinary practice, students are enrolled in English language and interview preparation classes, with the expectation that after graduation many will find employment in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Currently, classes are held in a hotel kitchen, and bakery products are sold ad hoc, with many donated to nearby charities focused on the needs of women and children. However, to make the program sustainable, the RoundTrip Foundation plans to assist The Bakery School in transitioning to a social enterprise in the coming years, complete with dedicated training facilities and a retail outlet serving fresh bakery goods to tourists.

With over 90% of students securing an internship in the hospitality or tourism industry upon graduation, The Bakery School equips graduates with the practical skills, confidence, and connections that change lives.
